- WHAT'S ON THE DISTRIBUTION DISK
-
- The files contained on the distribution diskette might
- vary from time to time, as more fonts become available.
- Typically, however, the diskette should contain the following
- files:
-
- PIVOT .EXE - The Pivot! Program
- GCHAR .EXE - The Font Editor Program
- xxxxxx .TRP - Portrait Font Files
- xxxxxx .TRL - Landscape Font Files
- SETUP .BAT - Makes working copy of the program
- READ .ME - Text Files with last minute explanations
- ORDER .ME - A form to order your registered copy
- MANUAL .DOC - Simple instruction on using the program
- CONTENTS - Listing of all files on disk
-
-
- Please refer to the READ.ME file on the diskette for any last
- minute changes, any new files added to the disk, etc.

- GETTING STARTED
- MAKING A WORKING DISK/DIRECTORY
-
-
- Before you start using PIVOT!, you should make a working copy of
- the program either on your hard disk or on a different floppy
- diskette. The SETUP.BAT file provided on the PIVOT! diskette
- makes the process simple and it just transfers the necessary
- files from the original diskette. There are no copy protection
- schemes or hidden files to wrestle with.
-
- To make a working copy of the program:
-
- At the DOS prompt place the original diskette in drive A, and
- enter the command:
-
- SETUP X:\Dir1\Dir2
-
- For example, to make a working copy of PIVOT! on a floppy disk
- in drive B: you should enter (the diskette should be formatted
- first):
-
- SETUP B:\ (.. and press ENTER ..)
-
- To make a working copy on drive C: in a directory named PIVOT!,
- you should enter:
-
- SETUP C:\PIVOT! (.. and press ENTER ..)
-
-
- After the above operation is completed and the DOS prompt appears
- on your screen, place the original diskette in a safe place. If
- your working diskette gets damaged, you can repeat the above
- process to make a new working disk.

- STARTING THE PROGRAM
-
-
- PIVOT! has no installation process, no external device drivers,
- etc. The system minimum required system configuration can be
- specified when the program is started. The various configuration
- options that are available, can be invoked by a number of
- switches (option commands) as demonstrated below:
-
-
-
- PIVOT /E Starts the program on an EGA monitor.
-
- PIVOT /P Starts the program with panel (rather than pull-down)
- menus.
-
- PIVOT /Q Quick screen updates (flickering on some monitors).
-
-
- After the program has been loaded into memory, the opening
- screen will be displayed. Press any key to continue with the
- program. After the opening screen, the main PIVOT! screen will
- appear.

- MENUS
-
-
- Keeping with the AS-EASY-AS tradition, many powerful commands
- may be accessed by activating the main menu. This may be done by
- pressing the [/] key which is usually located on the right side
- of the keyboard, just above the space bar. Once this key is
- pressed a window will appear on the top left corner of the screen,
- containing the main menu commands.
-
- If the program was started with the /P switch (see section on
- option switches), then a two line horizontal menu is displayed in
- the command panel area (top of the screen). We suggest that
- unless you feel very strongly about it, you do not use the /P
- switch. The Pull-Down menus provide you with a useful
- trail through the different levels of menus in the program.
-
- The first option in the menu will be highlighted by a moveable
- pointer, and the panel area, on the top of the screen, will
- display additional information about the highlighted option.
-
- The menu pointer can be moved by pressing the cursor arrow keys
- (on the numeric key pad ). Pressing LEFT, UP or BACKSPACE will
- move the selection bar up. Pressing RIGHT, DOWN or SPACE will
- move the selection bar down.
-
- The display position of the menu window can be toggled between
- the left and right side of the screen by pressing the period (.)
- key. The type of menu can be toggled from window to panel by
- pressing the exclamation mark "!" .
-
- The width of the menu window can be expanded by pressing the [<]
- key o contracted by pressing the [<] key. The maximum allowable
- width of menu is 30 characters.
-
- To select a command or sub menu, use the cursor keys to highlight
- the option you want and press the [ENTER] key OR press the key
- corresponding to first letter of the desired option.

- PIVOT COMMANDS
-
- [FILE] (/F)
- Enter the File access menu. Commands in this menu allow
- you to list the files present on a specified disk, change the
- default directory, etc.
-
-
- [FILE, RETRIEVE] (/FR)
- When this command is invoked, the user is presented with a list
- of available worksheet files on the currently default disk
- drive/directory. Using the arrow keys, highlight the file you
- want to retrieve and press [ENTER].
-
-
- [FILE, LIST] (/FL)
- Lists the user selected files on the currently default disk
- drive/directory. The user is presented with three possible
- choices.
-
- w?? - List all files with 'w' as the first letter of the
- file extension, regardless of the second and third
- extension letters, (i.e., files with WK1, WKS, WLL as a
- file extension would allappear in the requested
- listing).
-
- P?? - List all files with 'p' as the first letter of the
- file extension, regardless of the second and third
- extension letters, (i.e., files with PRN, PRT, P1Q as a
- file extension would all appear in the requested
- listing).
-
- Other - List all files on the currently default disk
- drive/directory.
-
-
- [FILE, DIR] (/FD)
- Specify a new default disk drive and directory. When PIVOT!
- first starts it uses the logged drive and the default directory
- to search for all file requests. Using this option will allow the
- user to access files in other drives and directories.
-
-
- [FILE, QUIT] (/FQ)
- Exit the File access menu and return to the main menu.

-
-
-
- [PRINT] (/P)
- Enters the Printing menu. The commands available in this menu
- are displayed below:
-
-
- [PRINT, RANGE] (/PR)
- Define the range of spreadsheet to be printed. This operation
- must be performed before any portions of the spreadsheet can be
- printed. If no range has been selected and 'Print, Go' is
- selected (see below), the program displays an appropriate message
- and returns to the menu.
-
-
- [PRINT, LINEFEED] (/PL)
- Advance the printer one line up. Useful for spacing printouts
- without messing up the printer's line counter.
-
-
- [PRINT, PAGEADV] (/PP)
- Advance the printer to top of next page, (Page eject).
-
-
- [PRINT, ADJUST] (/PA)
- Reset the printer line pointer to the top of page. If, for some
- reason, the printer is manually interrupted, use of this command
- would line up the physical top-of-form (top of page) with the
- program's top-of-page.
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS] (/PO)
- Set the different options for the printer.
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS, MARGIN, LEFT] (/POML)
- Set the left Margin, (0 - 240 spaces)
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS, MARGIN, RIGHT] (/POMR)
- Set the right margin (0 - 240 spaces, i.e. you can print up to
- 240 characters per line).
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS, MARGIN, TOP] (/POMT)
- Set the top margin (number of lines).
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS, MARGIN, BOTTOM] (/POMB)
- Set the bottom margin (number of lines).
-
-
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS, PGLINES] (/POP)
- Set the number of lines per page, default 66 for portrait
- orientation. Note that the pagelength should not exceed the
- calculated number of printable lines (displayed by the program).
- This calculated value is based on the font size, the line specing
- (in dots) and the page size in inches.
-
-

-
-
-
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS, HEADER] (/POH)
- Set a single line for header message which will appear at the top
- of each printed page.
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTIONS, FOOTER] (/POF)
- Set a single line for footer message which will appear at the
- bottom of each printed page.
-
-
- [PRINT, OPTION, QUIT] (/POQ)
- Exit the Print, Option menu and return to the main print menu.
-
-
- [PRINT, GO] (/PG)
- Initiate the printing process. NOTE: You must define the
- print range at before issuing this command or an error will
- occur.

-
- [SETTINGS]
- This menu controls all the settings that are required for the
- desired type of printing. Once this menu ia accessed, the user
- is presented with options to select fonts, specify the print
- mode, etc.
-
-
- [SETTINGS, FONT] (/SF)
- Select one of the fonts available. There are two resident fonts
- (courier and sanserif). External fonts are also available, (see
- the GCHAR program which is distributed as part of the PIVOT!
- package) which can be loaded using the ReadFont Command.
-
-
- [SETTINGS, MODE] (/SM)
- Specify the print mode (character size) desired. Three modes are available,
- Compressed, Normal and Double. The mode options may be combined with the
- density options to produce a wide variety of print styles.
-
-
- [SETTINGS, DOT, DENSITY] (/SDD)
- Three density options are available in PIVOT!. Normal (Low)
- density will result in rough (rugged) characters on most printers
- but is quite fast. Double (Medium) density is somewhat slower
- but produces a better quality print. Quad (High), of course,
- will produce a good quality print, on most printers, but will
- take significantly longer that the Low density option. Please
- note that when selecting low density you also have to set the
- character size. The reason this is not done by the program
- automatically is so that you can be given the flexibility of
- using your own combination of density and character size.
-
-
- [SETTINGS, DOT, LINSPC] (/SDS)
- Set the number of lines per inch (vertical spacing of characters).
-
-
- [SETTINGS, DOT, CHARSPC] (/SDC)
- Specify the character spacing, (i.e., how many dot positions each
- character will occupy).
-
-
- [SETTINGS, PASSES] (/SP)
- Specify the number of passes the printhead is to make over the
- same line. One pass is fast but produces rough characters. Two
- passes is twice as slow but produces much better print. You
- should experiment with Mode, Density and Passes options
- combinations to find the ones that produce acceptable print at
- reasonable speeds for you.
-
-
-
- [SETTINGS, WIDTH] (/SW)
- Set the width of the print page in inches.
-
-
-
-
-
- (C) Copyright TRIUS, Inc. March 1989 Page 12
-
-
-
-
-
- [SETTINGS, CODES] (/SC)
- Using this menu you can tailor PIVOT for your own printer. Once
- in this menu you can set your printer control codes for the
- following:
-
-
-
- Single Density Graphics
- Double Density Graphics
- Quadruple Density Graphics
- LineFeed
- Reset
-
-
- Note that control codes are specified using their decimal ASCII
- number and are separated by a backslash '\'. For example
- \027\078 or \015, etc.
-
-
- [SETTINGS, HARDWARE] (/SH)
- Specify which parallel port your printer is connected to. You
- are given the choice of LPT1 or LPT2. Note that when PIVOT! is
- first started, the default parallel port is LPT1.
-
-
- [SETTINGS, SAVE] (/SS)
- This command does exactly what it says. It saves all current
- settings, so that next time you start PIVOT! (from the same drive
- and sub-didectory) it will remember them for you.

-
- USING GCHAR
-
- The second program of the package is GCHAR, (for Graphic
- Characters). This powerful package allows you to define your
- own complete character sets with VERY LITTLE effort. These
- character sets, in turn, can be used to print your documents
- either in portrait or landscape orientation using the PIVOT!
- program.
-
- The GCHAR system is made up of the GCHAR.EXE program and a number
- of XXXXXXX.TRP font files.
-
-
- To run the program, simply put the diskette with GCHAR.EXE and
- the XXXXXX.TRP files in the logged disk drive (or log on to the
- directory containing these files), type GCHAR, and press enter.
-
- After you read the opening screen, press any key to continue with
- the program.
-
-
- The program will display all the XXXXXX.TRP files on the logged
- disk, and will ask you to select one of the files by moving the
- large cursor (with the use of the arrow keys) and pressing ENTER
- when the cursor is over the font file that you wish to edit.
- Don't worry, the original file will stay intact, unless, of
- course, you intentionaly want to overwrite it as you will see
- later on.
-
- Once the font file has been selected, the program will let you
- know that it is reading the information on the file. After all
- the information is read, the main GCHAR screen will be displayed.
-
- The screen is made up of a characters table, to the right, the
- function key definitions, in the middle and a large current-
- character-replica on the left. The editing is done in this
- current character box, by toggling a print block ON of OF (as
- explained below).
-
- The operations of GCHAR are mainly controlled by the function
- keys as displayed in the main sreen.
-
- Positioning of the block cursor on the large size framed
- character on the left portion of the screen is done with the
- arrow keys (arrow keys are located on the numeric pad, on the
- right hand size of an IBM PC-type keyboard). Note that a mouse can
- also be used for positioning, if it is installed using the
- executable mouse driver rather than the device driver (see your
- mouse literature for information on how to do this).

-
-
- GCHAR FUNCTION KEYS
-
- F1 - (Re)set: Pressing the F1 key toggles the current pixel block
- ON or OFF. This corresponds to that particular print position
- being defined as ON or OFF when this font file is used with
- PIVOT!.
-
-
- F2 - Advance: Pressing the F2 key advances one location on the
- Character table. ( The movement is from top left to bottom
- right). The large character replica is updated and the
- character currently selected,in the character table, starts
- blinking.
-
-
- F3 - Backup: Pressing the F3 key backs up one location on the
- Character table. The operation of this key is exactly the
- opposite of F2.
-
-
- F4 - Clear: This key clears the large character replica on the
- left hand side of the screen.
-
-
- F5 - Invert: Pressing F5, inverts the color of the large size
- character replica on the left hand side of the screen.
-
-
-
- F6 - Flip Horiz.: F6 flips the large size character replica
- about its vertical axis of symmetry.
-
-
-
- F7 - Type: Once this function is invoked, the program prompts you
- for a color choice. Then if your system is equipped with a
- monitor that can support graphics, typing will display the
- characters of the current font as a graphics image. Once you
- have finished typing, press enter to return to the main screen.
- Note that this option is only supported on CGA or compatible
- monitor/card combinations (no Hercules).
-
-
-
- F8 - SHL: Pressing F8 rotates the pixels of the current line,
- on the large character replica, one position to the left.
- Continuous pressing of the key, will eventually rotate the pixels
- back to their original position. Experiment with this function
- key, and see how easy it is to generate your personal italics
- font.
-
-
- F9 -SHR: Similar to F9 above, but it rotates the pixels on
- the current line to the right.
-
-
-
-
-
- (C) Copyright TRIUS, Inc. March 1989 Page 15
-
-
-
-
-
- [alt] F2 - Down Row: Pressing the alternate key and F2 at the
- same time, points to the character table one row down. The large
- character replica is updated.
-
-
- [alt] F3 - Up Row: This function is exactly to [alt] F2 above.
- When invoked, it points to the character table one line above the
- current position, and the large character replica is updated.
-
- Q - Quit: As the name applies, presing Q initiates the quitting
- process. Once Q is pressed, a message appears at the bottom of
- the screen asking if you really want to quit. If you press 'N',
- then the program returns you to the main screen. If you press 'Y'
- then the program asks if you want to save the new font file.
- Answering 'N' to this prompt, will bring you back to DOS and the
- font file you were working on is not saved. If, on the other
- hand, you answer 'Y', then you are asked for a font file name.
- Type the name and press ENTER. If you do not type a name and just
- press enter, then the font file is saved under the name FONT.TR?,
- (Note that if a file named FONT.TR? allready exists, then it is
- overwritten by the new file).
